How to Identify and Eradicate Whiteflies on Crops

Whiteflies are minuscule, winged insects related to aphids and mealybugs. Despite their name, they are not true flies. Roughly 1/12 of an inch long and triangular in shape, they congregate on the undersides of leaves. While numerous whitefly species exist, most target a limited range of host plants. However, a few problematic varieties, including the greenhouse whitefly and silverleaf whitefly, have a broader host range. Silverleaf whiteflies, slightly smaller and more yellow than their counterparts, are particularly prevalent in the southern United States.

Whiteflies can infest various plants, from ornamental flowers to warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and okra. Certain species might also attack sweet potatoes, cole crops (cabbage family), and citrus trees. Indoors, they can infest most common houseplants, particularly those with soft, smooth leaves.

Signs of Whitefly Infestation

Similar to aphids, whiteflies utilize their piercing mouthparts to extract plant sap. In the process, they excrete a sticky substance called honeydew. Unattended honeydew fosters the growth of fungal diseases like sooty mold on leaves.

Heavy whitefly infestations can rapidly weaken plants, hindering their ability to photosynthesize. This results in wilting, pale or yellow leaves, stunted growth, and eventually, shriveling and leaf drop.

Honeydew presence indicates whiteflies have been feeding for a while. You might also observe ants attracted to the sweet honeydew.

Identifying Whiteflies on Plants

Whiteflies favor feeding on new growth. Begin your inspection by examining recently unfurled leaves.

Undersides of leaves: Scrutinize the undersides of leaves, particularly around the veins, for white insects. Additionally, check leaf surfaces for sticky honeydew.
Disturbing whiteflies: When whiteflies are feeding, a sudden approach will cause them to erupt in a swarm, making their presence evident.
Eggs: Look for eggs laid on the undersides of leaves. These mark the emergence of a new generation. Upon hatching, whitefly larvae appear as tiny, immobile, white ovals. Left undetected, gardeners often miss whiteflies until the infestation escalates. A single adult female can lay up to 400 eggs, which hatch within a week to a month. Eggs are typically laid in a circular pattern, starting pale yellow and turning brown as hatching nears.

Eradicating Whiteflies

There are various solutions and traps available to manage whiteflies. The key is early intervention. Regularly inspect the backs of leaves in the mornings and evenings, searching for eggs or observing small insects scattering when you approach your plants.

Water spray: As with aphids, begin by blasting whiteflies with a forceful stream from your watering hose or a spray bottle. This dislodges nymphs, eggs, and disrupts the adult population.
Insecticidal soap: Consider spraying your plants’ leaves with insecticidal soap, strictly following the product’s instructions. Ensure thorough coverage, including the undersides of leaves. Repeat applications two to three times as necessary.
Spray timing: For optimal results, spray plants in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Mid-day heat might cause adverse reactions in your plants. Additionally, spraying in the evening minimizes the risk of harming pollinators or beneficial insects.

Preventing Whitefly Infestations

The following measures which I have listed below can be taken to prevent whiteflies from infesting crops;

Quarantine new plants: Inspect all new plants for pests before introducing them to your existing collection. Quarantine the new additions for a period to identify and address any potential pest or disease issues.
Encourage natural predators: Maintain a population of natural predators to prevent whitefly outbreaks. Avoid using insecticides, as they can kill beneficial insects that prey on whiteflies. Ladybugs, spiders, green lacewing larvae, dragonflies, and hummingbirds are some of the many beneficial insects that can control whitefly populations.
Habitat creation: Consider creating a habitat to attract dragonflies, damselflies (which also help control mosquitoes), and hummingbirds.
Mulching: Apply reflective aluminum mulch early in the season, particularly around tomatoes and peppers. This disrupts whiteflies’ ability to locate their preferred host plants.
Limited reliance on chemical insecticides: When dealing with whiteflies, avoid chemical insecticides. Whiteflies often exhibit resistance to these chemicals. Additionally, these insecticides can kill beneficial insects that naturally control whitefly populations and those responsible for garden pollination.
